Iolo's Wild Times was on tv again this week revisiting places he'd filmed years ago. We took him and his crew out to Grassholm last summer with Dr Steve Votier, who has been researching gannets for years. It was a fascinating trip - good weather and a boat full of scientists - we learn a lot from this sort of work! Wild Times is available on BBC i player and has some lovely footage.
Gannets are stunning birds, impressive in their diving and navigational skills, with striking heads (described amusingly but aptly by Steve Backshall as ninja-like).
It's no hardship standing by on the boat on days like this watching the birds wheel overhead. It's not so much fun in the rain but Grassholm is a really special place and the gannets are always well worth watching.
