Tim was taking a group of scientists and an RSPB warden out to Grassholm this evening as part of their gannet monitoring project. They were happily photographing shearwaters when one of them shouted 'Stop the boat!' Emergency? Fortunately no. A Fea's Petrel came towards the boat and then flew alongside for a time. Apparently this may be a first for Pembrokeshire.
One of the joys of working with scientists is that we get to be out and about at sea when we otherwise might not be. Calm evenings are perfect for impromptu dolphin spotting and there's always a possibility of seeing something unusual - and having the luxury of someone on board who may be able to identify it. Petrels are beautiful birds but we've never seen the guys this excited before!
